Microscopic Quantum Mechanical Foundation of Fourier's Law

چکیده
Besides the growing interest in old concepts like temperature and entropy at the nanoscale, theories of relaxation and transport have recently regained a lot of attention. With the electronic circuits and computer chips getting smaller and smaller, a fresh look should be appropriate on the equilibrium and nonequilibrium thermodynamics at small length scales far below the thermodynamic limit, i.e. on the theoretical understanding of original macroscopic processes, e.g. transport of energy, heat, charge, mass, magnetiza-tion etc. Only from the foundations of a theory its limits of applicability may be inferred. This review tries to give an overview of the background and recent developments in the field of nonequilibrium quantum thermodynamics focusing on the transport of heat in small quantum systems.

Fourier's law: insight from a simple derivation.
The onset of Fourier's law in a one-dimensional quantum system is addressed via a simple model of weakly coupled quantum systems in contact with thermal baths at their edges. Using analytical arguments we show that the crossover from the ballistic (invalid Fourier's law) to diffusive (valid Fourier's law) regimes is characterized by a thermal length scale, which is directly related to the profi...
متن کاملFourier's law of heat conduction: quantum mechanical master equation analysis.
We derive the macroscopic Fourier's Law of heat conduction from the exact gain-loss time convolutionless quantum master equation under three assumptions for the interaction kernel. To second order in the interaction, we show that the first two assumptions are natural results of the long time limit. The third assumption can be satisfied by a family of interactions consisting of an exchange effec...
متن کاملWhen the classical & quantum mechanical considerations hint to a single point; a microscopic particle in a one dimensional box with two infinite walls and a linear potential inside it
In this paper we have solved analytically the Schrödinger equation for a microscopic particle in a one-dimensional box with two infinite walls, which the potential function inside it, has a linear form. Based on the solutions of this special quantum mechanical system, we have shown that as the quantum number approaches infinity the expectation values of microscopic particle position and square ...
متن کاملBreakdown of Fourier's law in nanotube thermal conductors.
We present experimental evidence that the room temperature thermal conductivity (kappa) of individual multiwalled carbon and boron-nitride nanotubes does not obey Fourier's empirical law of thermal conduction. Because of isotopic disorder, kappa's of carbon nanotubes and boron-nitride nanotubes show different length dependence behavior. Moreover, for these systems we find that Fourier's law is ...
متن کاملOn the probability of violations of Fourier's law for heat flow in small systems observed for short times.
We study the statistical mechanics of thermal conduction in a classical many-body system that is in contact with two thermal reservoirs maintained at different temperatures. The ratio of the probabilities, that when observed for a finite time, the time averaged heat flux flows in and against the direction required by Fourier's Law for heat flow, is derived from first principles. This result is ...
